Today I saw a writing prompt that I think is a fun way of connecting back to Scotland, the world, and my favourite subject – me, Fraser. That’s not true, my favourite subject is actually my family and dog. But my name is Fraser, it’s a good one and I’d pick it myself if I had the chance. And Fraser has a funny meaning because it is said to come from the French word “fraise”, which means strawberry.
I happen to be wearing a strawberry shirt today.
Wait, Fraser means Strawberry? Why?
Who knows, either there was a lot of strawberry farming in Scotland which got sold to the French back in the day, or there was a family of gingers who the French were making fun of.
Fraser is a last name, a clan name if you’re wanting especial Scottishness. I have no affiliation with the Fraser family, which is a shame because I adore Brendan Fraser in his bisexual epic The Mummy (1999).
It’s a last name that became a first name, likely through it being used as a name to honour people. It’s also got a fairly nice sound- FRAY – sir.
How did you get a city?
I’d like to say I was given the City of Fraser in 1895 for my great sense of duty towards Industry, Education, and Community. In reality, the City of Fraser, Michigan, just happens to have the same name as me because it was name after a lawyer named Alexander J. Frazer. The Americans pronounce it Frasier, kind of like the hit tv show starring Kelsey Grammar and David Hyde Pierce. All theses Fraser/Frasier/Frazer names seem to derive from the same root.
How many Frasers are there?
It was an exceptionally popular name in the 90s in Scotland so it’s really quite common. In worldwide terms, the family seems to have travelled well.
We’ve got 4 US cities, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan. We got hills in Malaysia and Canada. There’s a river, a canyon, a valley, a plateau. There’s even a Fraser Point in Antarctica!
