In 10 years time, I will be a success. My free walking tours will get decent numbers of good people which will pay properly. There’s basically only a few particular routes I can go that ensure that won’t happen. This confidence might seem a little strange to many but I can envision it. And once you know what something ought to look like, you start to act in a way which makes it more likely.
Current situation
I’ve got my website (this one). I’m set up on tons of different places which funnel in customers. I’m on lots of different social media with varying effect. Emails are flying out regularly to relevant people. Though essentially I’m doing all this alone, I’m not fully alone. I’ve got my wife to give me constant support and assistance. I’ve got tons of friends who give ideas and feedback. My family are also here and they find me opportunities regularly.
Your network is your net worth as the LinkedIn people say.
Though my current income level is the lowest it has been in years, I’m building something of my own that will only continue to improve. We’ve got to 33 reviews on Google Maps which is not bad.
10 years on
The reviews will be in the 10s of thousands. I will need other guides to assist me with the number of bookings though I think I’d like it to be a small team of guides instead of a big group. More people bring more problems. Better 6 that can be trusted than 60 with any doubt.
My housing situation will have improved. I’m thinking some sort of mansion but let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Edinburgh’s housing is messed up. My daughter will be beginning her ascent to being an Olympic gymnast, or parkour if that’s an Olympic event. My son will be the smartest 12-year old and will have been tour guiding in his spare time from the age of 6 as he’s got incredible speaking abilities.
In my vision, I am just as happy as I am now because I’m personally delighted. But it will be mingled with the sense of accomplishment of having faced the challenges of today.
