For years it has been a dream of ours to show off one of the most beautiful natural spaces in Edinburgh and at last with Spring fast approaching, we are proud to announce its coming – a tour of the Meadows and you can book at that link!
It’s an opportunity for travelling guests and residents of Edinburgh to find out about this amazing space. It’s also, more than anything, an opportunity to make great memories and take great photographs.
A tour of the Meadows: An idea with a long gestation
The Edinburgh Street Historians are lovers of Spring. Even if our boy Robert Louis Stevenson called it a “meteorological purgatory” and the weather can be intemperate and it makes getting dressed troublesome.
The thing is, after the misery that is Winter, Spring is a welcome respite. Spring is the time when we come alive again, shake off a layer of jumper, and we can begin to embrace nature.
The initial plan
Initially, the Meadows Tour was imagined two years ago. A plan was made and the main stories were picked and written. Then nothing came of it due to the difficulty in getting it off the ground.
The founder of the Edinburgh Street Historians was newly a father and he had many other concerns than concocting new tours. Now, however, the time is ripe. After recent discoveries regarding the Meadows and the interesting stories it can tell about the city, we are embarking on our quest.
The basic plan
We will meet as a group outside Uplands Roast and then we’ll stroll around the perimeter before stopping for photos. It’s a very basic plan and that’s why it’s so elegant.
During the tour, guests will hear about the ancient story for how this park took shape. From its beginnings as a forest to its time as the city’s bathtub. All the way up to its modern day legacy as a Millennium park and the efforts to keep the green space pleasant for future generations.
The tour will be arranged on a Free Tour / Pay What You Think It’s Worth model to ensure that it is accessible. Unlike most of Edinburgh, the Meadows is relatively flat so people of all mobility can enjoy them.
We look forward to seeing some of you!
